Microsoft has officially announced the Surface Pro 3, the new device that will stop the confusion between tablet and laptop, creating the perfect coexistence between the two form factors for the type of user that wants a tablet but needs a PC.
This year, it feels like Microsoft has taken a lot of criticism of the Surface Pro 2 and worked on it for the Surface Pro 3. The weight was a serious downside, but Microsoft has got the Surface Pro 3 lighter than a MacBook Air.
Microsoft has ensured the high-end Surface Pro 3 will come with Intel Core i7 processors and while the fan is still there, it is not as noticeable as before. The “lapability” issue was brought up again and Microsoft has added more angles for the kickstand, along with a new design to the Type Cover.
The Type Cover has had a slight redesign, offering a bigger trackpad that should improve mouse input. We are sure to see more accessories from Microsoft coming in the next few months and a few redesigns on their existing covers.
Screen size has been upgraded, from a 10.1-inch display, Microsoft has added a new 2:3 aspect ratio 12-inch display. The display is full HD and even though the aspect ratio might be a little weird, Microsoft has been known for their excellent screens.
Microsoft has always made the Surface Pro for people who want to use the applications available on Windows 8, instead of having the RT experience. The move to more powerful internals, a slimmer and thinner design and new redesign on their accessories could give them the edge in this battle.
Starting at £719 for the Intel Core i3 for Surface Pro 3, users can go as far as 8GB of RAM with an Intel Core i7 processor for around £1499. Microsoft might think the Surface Pro 3 captures the ambitions of both a laptop and tablet, but for many a cheaper option might be worthwhile.
