Sony has announced the proclaimed “selfie smartphone,” named the Xperia C3. Looking like a regular Xperia smartphone, the only difference from a looks standpoint is the large front facing camera, looking like something Sony will usually put on the back of a device.
The Xperia C3 is a mid-range device and the big feature here is the front-facing camera. The question everyone will ask is why anyone would purchase a smartphone for the front-facing camera, that is something only a few people can answer, those who actually find this smartphone acceptable.
Interestingly, Sony has added a 5.5-inch screen to the Xperia C3, larger than most of Sony’s mid-range devices. The 720p Triluminous display is nothing to get excited about, but decent for a mid-range device.
Internally it is less excited, the Xperia C3 comes with a 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage with expansion up to 32GB, 8MP Exmor sensor and of course, the 5MP front facing sensor.
The phone will come running Android KitKat 4.4 with Sony’s home-brand skin. The skin looks nice for what it is worth, but still doesn’t win us over from stock Android or some other ROMs like CyanogenMod.
Sony has also dropped the waterproof trademark feature they like to use on all their Xperia smartphones. We are not sure why this has not been added to the Xperia C3, but it does lower the excitement once again for this smartphone.
Perhaps some people out there will see this smartphone and think it is perfect for them, others might think it is the worst decision Sony has made on the smartphone line. It is a good looking phone, typical of Sony products and has most of the features a normal Sony device would have available.
As long as it is priced reasonably, it looks like an average mid-range device with a rather large front facing camera, for selfies and video.
