Samsung has been looking to change up the design of their smartphones for quite some time now, moving away from the plastic shell to something more premium, especially for their higher-end devices, competing with the iPhone and HTC One.
The Galaxy Alpha will be the first attempt at this new metal based design. Samsung officially announced the 4.7-inch smartphone will be coming in September, around the same time the iPhone 6 will be available for customers.
Apart from the 4.7-inch 720p AMOLED display, most of the Galaxy Alpha specs keep up with the current generation. Internally, the metal smartphone runs an octa-core Exynos processor, split between two quad-core CPUs, running at 1.8GHz and 1.3GHz.
Alongside the Exynos CPU sits 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, no microSD card slot will be added. There will be a 1860mAh battery inside the Galaxy Alpha, we are not sure if Samsung will seal the back, previously users have been able to replace the battery.
Samsung will add a 12MP rear camera and 2.3MP front camera, no word on if the rear camera will feature OIS.
Samsung will be adding Android KitKat 4.4.4 to the Galaxy Alpha, underneath their custom thick TouchWiz UI skin. It looks like the Galaxy Alpha will not have a heart-rate sensor on the back of the device, but will include the fingerprint sensor.
The Galaxy Alpha will come in five colors,black, white, gold, silver and blue. Some colors will be exclusive to the country or carrier. In the UK, Carphone Warehouse will ship the blue color exclusively. EE and Three will both support the device at launch.
No word on price for the Galaxy Alpha, hopefully Samsung looks to make this competitive with the iPhone 6 by lowering the price a touch. Overall, the smartphone reminds us of the Moto X, a little lacklustre on the specs front, but could still be a top-notch device.
