Having just come off a $1.7 billion loss on the mobile market, Sony needs some good press to start getting the Xperia Z3 noticed in the West. It looks like one feature has a lot of Android fans impressed, the battery life stats.
Sony has always been a good choice for battery life, the Xperia Z2 ranked highly in the ratings last year. The Xperia Z3 ranks even higher, scoring more than the Huawei Ascend Mate7, a smartphone with a 4100mAh battery.
Internally, the Xperia Z3 is only running on a 3100mAh battery, larger than the HTC One M8, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus and Moto X, but still not the biggest in the smartphone world, yet it hits nine and a half hours screen on time.
Compare this to the iPhone 6 with five and a half hours screen time or the HTC One M8 with seven and a quarter hours. Everything pales in comparison to the Xperia Z3 and this could be huge for people who want good battery life.
The nine hours isn’t indicative of everyday use either, nine hours screen on time could turn into three to four days of usage, without having to charge the Xperia Z3, a huge step in optimisation from last year.
We are not sure how Sony has managed to make the Xperia Z3 such a lightweight when it comes to battery use. The software UI over the top of Android KitKat 4.4.4 certainly helps, alongside some of KitKat’s battery life enhancements.
Is this enough to make Sony’s life easier in the smartphone market? We are not sold. Sony does not advertise as heavily as Samsung or HTC and doesn’t have a large presence in Europe or the United States, especially for mobiles.
