I’m typing this while my hands are shaking with excitement. I remember buying my first printer back in 2006 and printing a colored pepperoni pizza. I still remember wishing that one day it would be cool if printers can print food – specifically pizza. Well, guess what – NOW THEY CAN!
Here are six of the most unbelievable stuff that can already be 3D printed with today’s technology:
PIZZA
Yay! Everyone’s favorite snack-slash-comfort food-slash-sustenance can now be printed – well, at least our dear NASA astronauts can enjoy it. This NASA-funded 3D printing project is edible. The organization started funding 3D-printed food in order to feed our lonely astronauts in space. I sure hope they mass-produce this in the future for lonely geeks like me. The pizza printer works by using multiple cartridge at once, containing material like dough, sauce, or cheese.
GUNS
Well, that escalated quickly. A 3D-printed firearm was recently created by a “high-tech” gun company called Defense Distributed. They call this gun the “Liberator”; it is made up of 16 different parts, all from plastic, with the exception of a nail, which is used as a firing pin. The gun’s barrel and entire body only takes a couple of seconds to print. The US government, however, has already expressed their concern over the idea of creating homemade guns. I’m not into this as well.
BICYCLES
Soon you can skip the bike store and just put a 3D printer in your garage to print a personalized bike. Introducing the Empire 3D-printed titanium trail bike. Made in the UK, this nine-component bike may be the future of transportation. Hover boards come on! Start mass-producing already.
ORGANS
No, not the pipe instruments you see in church, but real human body organs – including bones, ears and even skin. 3D printing have made it possible to produce these organs before, and our medical industry has already experimented with printing more intricate and complex organs such as liver tissue as well as embryonic stem cells through the use of “bio printers” and what is named a “cell gel.”
BALL GOWNS
I can almost hear the sounds of men around the world cheering. If 3D printers can print ball gowns, then perhaps their girls can skip the mall altogether and just stay at home and print their clothes. More time for beer and video games. Just last year, celebrity Dita Von Teese wore a magnificent ball gown produced by a 3D printer. Printing bikinis, purses, shoes and other accessories are not so far off.
HOMES
Well, this one is still in the works, but based on the update by the Best Computer Science Schools, they have the capacity to build a 2500 square foot home in just 24 hours using their extra-large 3D printers. It sounds very promising, but may not leave much room for artistic projects.
