When it comes to in-ear headphones, there are few things to consider. Unlike over-head and on-ear headphones, you only have to worry about the sound quality, size and is it adjustable. Well, you could go deeper in the technical space and whether it’s foldable but, face it you can easily try them on before you buy in the shops, unlike the in-ear types. Sennheiser are not newcomers when it comes to sound, they have the expertise and have been doing this for years now.
Sennheiser Momentum M2 IEi Review
The Momentum in-ear from Sennheiser is snazzy, it stands out on shelves and the design is great. Every detail from the cable to the individual earpieces have been well thought through. The sound quality is also very good, considering the price and in fact the brand. When you buy a Mercedes or an Audi, you expect nothing but good design and great performance, and this is exactly what I mean when I say brand.
They are neatly packaged and the booklet, earbuds are all carefully placed so you don’t struggle to take them apart or break them in the process. It comes with a carry case which is what portability is all about. Looking at the design in detail, you will notice each earpiece or drivers have the chrome finish Sennheiser logo and they are slightly curved so they can sit comfortably in ear. You will also notice the right ear with the small “R” and the left with three dots, although not sure why it’s there instead of a “L”. The cable is passed through a loop, and I figured it helps keep the cable at bay out of the way.
The cable is flat, preventing it to easily tangle up and the red/black colour also looks great with the rest of the premium look they are going for. On the right ear piece is the inline remote control which you can use to change track, increase/decrease volume, use for answering and ending calls and ofcourse, a built-in microphone for your calls. It’s compatible or made for the iPhone and iPod, so you may find that the controls doesn’t work on other devices. Why Sennheiser have decided to keep things separate is another story entirely, but for the sake of this review, you should now be aware of this.
Moving down a little, you have a cable loop which again, keeps the cables tidy around your neck, and it’s great to see it being used, as most manufacturers have ditched that. I also liked the L-shaped 3.5mm jack, as it tucks away nicely when using my smartphone at the same time. The only time the L-shaped design becomes annoying is when I need to use my Mophie battery case. The rubber casing on the cable also comes as a concern for longevity, but I didn’t have any fraying issue during my two weeks with the M2 IEi.
When it comes to the sound performance, it was a pleasure to use, although it could perform a little better in the mid-range and the base could be a little more punchy to make it feel more immersive. You know that punchy feeling you get when using active noise cancellation?
Overall, they are affordable, looks nice and comes with a tough carry case. If you have bought them for your iPhone, you can take advantage of the inline remote control and the cables are just the right length to be able to have your music source in your jeans pocket and with the loop used, they cables aren’t annoying during use. The sound quality varies from genre to genre, although they still offer a consistent overall quality across them all. The base could be punchier but I liked that others can’t hear my music even when on loud levels.
