It’s probably safe to say that at this point in time, foldable smartphones are here to stay. With that being said, not content to let Samsung get all the glory, Motorola has invested a considerable amount of time and resources into rebuilding its Razr line, which many years ago served as the pinnacle of popularity and design when it came to flip phones. Times have changed though, and Motorola has a lot more competition to put up with. Is the Razr 50 Ultra enough to win foldable fans over?
Display Specs
One of the biggest highlights on the razr 50 Ultra is the external display, which is now the largest-ever among Motorola’s foldables, so much so that the front of the phone when closed exhibits small bezels, with the external screen capturing part of the area around the cameras. It’s a very spec-packed LTPO AMOLED panel which measures 4 inches with a 1272 x 1080 pixel resolution, a smooth 165Hz refresh rate, as well as a peak brightness of up to 2,400 nits.
The main display likewise manages to impress – when opened, it measures 6.9 inches with a sharp 1080 x 2640 resolution. It’s also an LTPO AMOLED panel which gets super bright at 3,000 nits of peak brightness, and also features a smooth 165Hz refresh rate. The phone comes with an IPX8 rating, and while it’s not completely water-resistant it does add a wee bit of protection versus some light moisture and a bit of splashing every now and then.
Internal Hardware and Cameras
Inside the phone you’ll find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, a more wallet-friendly version of the flagship 8 Gen 3 chip that’s a bit easier on the wallet in terms of overall costs. It works in tandem with 8GB of RAM, although Motorola will also offer a 12GB RAM version in select regions. The phone comes with 256GB of internal storage with a slightly more expensive 512GB option, which should be more than enough space for all your media onboard, although, it lacks a micro SD card slot for expandable storage.
For cameras, the phone’s main shooter setup consists of a 50 MP, f/1.7 primary lens, aided by a 50 MP, f/2.0 telephoto camera; there’s an inner 32 MP, f/2.4 shooter for selfies and video calls as well. The phone also comes with capable-enough video-recording capabilities, which max out at 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. For battery, the Razr 50 Ultra runs on a 4,000 mAh battery with support for 45W fast-charging, 15W wireless charging, and 5W reverse charging speeds.
Pricing and Availability
At the moment, the Moto Razr 50 Ultra is available in the UK starting at £999.99, competing with other premium foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series handsets. It’s available via Motorola’s official website, and we should expect to see it soon on other participating retailers in the UK. As far as foldables go, Motorola hasn’t held back in terms of hardware, and it’s a great option for buyers after a flagship foldable Android phone that doesn’t necessarily come with a Samsung logo on the back.
