What's This?

Following the launch of the OnePlus Watch 2 a while back, OnePlus recently unveiled its latest Wear OS smartwatch in the form of the OnePlus Watch 2R, priced at £249. While there might be a lot of similarities between the two models at first glance, OnePlus has developed the Watch 2R to be a more affordable version of sorts, and it does come with some key differentiating factors while retaining some familiar elements found on the mainline Watch 2. What can we expect though? Let’s take a look.

What Stays the Same

Like its bigger sibling, the OnePlus Watch 2R comes with the same flagship features including multi-day battery life, support for Google’s Wear OS platform, and OnePlus’s self-developed Dual-Engine Architecture, which combines the Snapdragon W5 for performance and the BES2700 MCU for efficiency. For those unfamiliar, the BES2700 is in charge of running background tasks and simpler functions on the RTOS platform, while the Snapdragon W5 handles more demanding software.

This architecture works in tandem with a 500 mAh battery, allowing the OnePlus Watch 2R to last for up to 100 hours of regular use in Smart Mode, and up to 48 hours with heavy use. The watch also supports 7.5W VOOC Fast Charging which fully charges the watch in 60 minutes. Other internal specs include 2GB RAM and 32GB of storage for apps and other downloads. It lacks LTE connectivity, and is only available in a Wifi version.

Design Changes

In terms of design, OnePlus has made some adjustments to the Watch 2R’s design in order to set it apart from the flagship model. For one, it ditches the stainless steel aesthetic and now comes with an aluminium chassis, available in either Forest Green and Gunmetal Gray. The new design also features two side buttons, with one for app access and a dedicated action button for fitness tracking. It also comes with a bit of added durability thanks to both 5ATM and IP68 standards.

The Watch 2R’s screen measure 1.43 inches, and likewise features an AMOLED touch panel. The watch’s bezel also comes with a two-tone design which OnePlus says is designed after classic timepieces.

Software and Fitness

As mentioned earlier, the OnePlus Watch 2R runs on Wear OS, which means users get access to Google apps like Assistant, Maps, Wallet, and Calendar. Of course there’s also room for downloadable third-party software and watch faces via the Google Play app. The Watch 2R also comes with Fast Pair which enables instant connectivity with OnePlus phones and other compatible Android smartphones, supporting features like calling, messaging, media control, and more.

The OnePlus Watch 2R also comes with the upgraded OHealth app, which simplifies health monitoring and supports healthy lifestyle habits. The app analyzes comprehensive health data, allowing users to seamlessly track their performance and progress. For sports junkies, there are over a hundred sports tracking modes available including badminton, running, tennis, skiing, and more. The Watch 2R also features insights for sleep tracking and heart rate variability (HRV).
