As with a lot of other Chinese brands in the past years, Vivo has spent its time building a strong selection of midrange smartphones, a lot of which pack some fairly impressive specifications at reasonable prices. This is once again evident with the launch of the Vivo V40 series, which bring worthwhile hardware to potential buyers after a capable-enough smartphone that doesn’t shy away from offering attractive hardware features.
As such, the new models include two devices, the V40 and V40 Pro, which are priced starting at €440 and €600 (when converted), respectively. Vivo has yet to announce global availability for the two devices however, which were initially launched for Indian markets. In any case, you might be curious if the new V40 series is the right phone for you – let’s take a look!
Design and Internals
In terms of overall hardware design, the Vivo V40 and V40 Pro pretty much share the same look with the overall slim profile, and even come with the same display specifications. The phones are available in several colour variants including Meteor Blue, Moonlight White, and Stellar Silver colors, and additional Nebula Purple and Sunglow Peach variants for the regular V40.
Vivo has equipped both devices with a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen that features a 2,800 x 1,260 pixel resolution alongside a 120Hz refresh rate. It also gets super bright at up to 4,500 nits of peak brightness, outshining most other smartphones in this price category. Both displays also feature a single 50MP front facing camera for selfies and video calls.
As for what’s ticking inside Vivo’s latest handsets, the V40 is equipped with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, and is available in several RAM and storage configurations at 8/128 GB, 12/256 GB, and 12/512 GB. Meanwhile, the V40 Pro features a more capable Dimensity 9200+ chip which is essentially a flagship-tier chipset, and memory configurations of 8/256 GB, 12/256 GB and 12/512 GB. Both devices are powered by massive 5,500 mAh batteries with support for 80W wired charging speeds.
Software, Camera Hardware
As with Vivo’s other phones, the Vivo V40 and V40 Pro come with Funtouch OS, with features based on Android 14. Vivo says that the phones will come with “50 months of smooth experience,” which is a rather unique way of describing the length of software support for the devices.
In terms of camera hardware, the V40 Pro comes with a stacked triple camera setup on the rear. The main sensor is a 50MP Sony IMX921 with optical image stabilization (OIS), and is joined by a 50MP telephoto portrait camera equipped with a Sony IMX816 sensor, and a 50MP ultra-wide camera. For the base model, the V40 offers a dual camera setup, also featuring a 50MP main sensor and a 50MP ultra-wide camera. Both models feature OIS and an “AI Aura Light Portrait” feature, which uses a ring LED flash for portrait photography.
Following their debut in India, the Vivo V40 and V40 Pro are expected to launch for more markets soon.
