What's This?

In a world where mirrorless cameras might seem like a “dime-a-dozen”, a lot of manufacturers are putting some extra effort into making sure that their cameras stand out from other rivals. Take for example the new Fujifilm X-M5, which packs a lot of bells and whistles aimed at creators and folks looking to grab the best possible mirrorless camera from Fujifilm. The new model expands Fujifilm’s X-series cameras, and boasts a lightweight design profile.

Weighing at around 355g, the X-M5 is a pocket-friendly camera with dimensions of just 111.9mm x 66.6mm x 38mm. This makes it easier to carry around for shoots and other outdoor projects, and makes for a compact travel companion. It does retain the general aesthetic found on Fujifilm’s other X-series camera models, with design accents like the symmetrical dials on the top plate and more. The camera packs a back-illuminated X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor with 26.1 megapixels in addition to a high-speed X-Processor 5 image processing engine.

You’ll also find subject detection AF onboard, which according to Fujifilm was developed using deep learning technology, and it works in tandem with existing Face / Eye AF capabilities. With AI, the camera can more accurately detect animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, airplanes, trains, insects and even drones. As for video, the X-M5 can record up to 6.2K/30P 4:2:2 10-bit video onto an SD card, with support for 4K/60P and 1080/240P footage. There’s of course built-in digital image stabilisation technology which should remove minor shakes, in addition to smoother visuals when recording while walking, for example.

Fujifilm adds that the X-M5 is the first camera in its lineup that packs three built-in microphones. This allows users to choose from four microphone directions including surround, front, back or front & back, making for a more versatile setup in situations where additional equipment isn’t readily available. The X-M5 is also the first in its range with a steady-state noise reduction feature, which is ideal for environments with troublesome ambient noise.

Fujifilm has equipped the camera with a VLOG Mode that lets users easily switch shooting conditions using the touchscreen, in addition to changes with the camera’s digital UI. There’s also a new 9:16 Short Movie Mode that allows for instant vertical video capture for social media content. Additionally, new bit rates of 8 Mbps and 25 Mbps can be found via the Media Recording Settings when shooting video, and shortens the transfer time to external devices such as smartphones, and social media uploads.

The FUJIFILM X-M5 will be available in the UK starting on 14 November 2024 from authorised Fujifilm retailers, the FUJIFILM House of Photography in London or the Fujifilm online store at £799, and comes in black and silver.
