Huawei is no stranger to premium product design – in fact, a lot of the company’s flagship smartphones, tablets and wearables are crafted to look exquisitely good, even giving gadgets from Apple a run for their money. Perhaps the same can be said of the Huawei Mate 70 Pro+ and the Mate 70 RS, which feature both impressive internal specs in addition to flashy designs. Let’s check them out!

First up is the Mate 70 Pro+. While most phone manufacturers opt to use glass and metal for their devices, the 70 Pro+ takes things a step further and integrates gold threads and brocade fibre into its rear panel, alongside a nylon material that’s designed to withstand knocks and bumps. There’s a textured surface that’s surrounded by a titanium alloy frame, and Huawei claims that it’s designed to be scratch and drop-resistant. All of this is wrapped in an IP69-certified chassis, which adds dust and water protection.
Up front is a large – and we do mean LARGE – 6.9-inch display, which just years ago would have placed the phone in compact tablet territory. It’s an LTPO OLED panel that features up to 2500 nits of peak brightness, a 2832 x 1316 pixel resolution, and up to a 120hz refresh rate. Huawei has added “Kunlun Glass” for extra protection from scratches, which also protects the 3D face-scanning system in the display.
Powering the phone is Huawei’s own Kirin 9020 chip – Huawei doesn’t use MediaTek or Qualcomm chips in its flagships, instead designing its own flagship SoCs. In this case, the Kirin chipset operates in tandem with 16GB of RAM, and this entire setup is powered by a 5,700 mAh battery, with support for super-fast 100W wired and 80W wireless charging speeds. As for cameras, the 70 Pro+ comes with a 50MP main sensor, accompanied by a 40MP ultrawide camera, a 48MP RYYB sensor, and a 4X telephoto lens; in front is a good-old 13MP selfie camera.

Meanwhile, the Huawei Mate 70 RS comes in a near-similar size thanks to a 6.9-inch display as well. It also comes with some similar specifications, with an LTPO OLED panel, 120Hz refresh rate, although it increases the peak brightness to 3,500 nits, and features a more durable version of Kunlun glass. Where it differs the most from the Mate 70 Pro+ however is with its design.
The Mate 70 RS comes in a more angular-looking style, with an octagonal camera bump and a rear panel that features bolder lines, both of which sharply contrast the more minimalist look found on the Mate 70 Pro+. Open up the phone though and there’s a lot of similar components, including the same 5,700 mAh capacity battery, 16GB of RAM, and it even comes with a lot of the same camera specifications. As for software, both phones run on HarmonyOS 4.3, Huawei’s own custom smartphone platform.
As for availability, the Mate 70 Pro+ and Mate 70 RS, are now up for pre-order. The Mate 70 Pro+ comes in four colours and two storage configurations, with prices starting at CNY 8,499. Meanwhile, the Mate 70 RS offers three colours and the same storage options, starting at CNY 11,999. Both models will ship on 19th December.
