While industry giants like MediaTek are often known for their mobile phone chips, the company also makes custom platforms for non-smartphone devices, which include IoT hardware. For those unfamiliar, the term “IoT” refers to the “internet of things,” which encompasses devices for both personal and enterprise use, such as smart displays, speakers, and more. With that in mind, MediaTek’s new Genio 702 and 520 models are designed for just that, with an extra boost of AI in the mix.

The chips are built on a 6nm process node with an integrated octa-core CPU that features a couple of Arm Cortex-A78 processors and six Cortex-A55 processors. With that in mind, the Genio 702 and Genio 520 platforms integrate edge-AI capabilities, along with support for generative AI models, human machine interfaces, in addition to multimedia and connectivity software and hardware features. MediaTek says that the two chips are capable of enabling up to 10 TOPS thanks to its built-in 8th-generation Neural Processing Unit, with acceleration for transformer and convolutional neural network (CNN) models. CK Wang, General Manager of the IoT Business Group at MediaTek comments:
“The Genio 720 and Genio 520 will unleash a new era of IoT innovation with powerful yet efficient generative AI capabilities on-device, offering a seamless user experience that also ensures data privacy…”
The Genio 702 and Genio 520 are also equipped with up to 16GB of LPDDR5 memory, which should come in handy when running language models (LLMs) like Llama, Gemini, Phi and DeepSeek, for example. Other features of the new chips include support for a single 4K/5K ultrawide display or dual 2.5K displays, 4K H.264/H.265 video decoding and encoding capabilities, dual ISP 16+16/32MP@30fps and support for up to 6xFHD30 cameras with MIPI virtual channels.

For connectivity, MediaTek has included compatibility for Wi-Fi 6/6E solutions, with additional support for Wi-Fi 7 and 5G Redcap via external modules. The Genio 702 and Genio 520 can also be used with a wide selection of different operating systems including Android, Yocto Linux, and Ubuntu. Finally, there’s also support for the Open Standard Module (OSM), reducing the development cycle needed for OSM-based projects. MediaTek’s partners are set to release OSM solutions with the Genio 720/520 in the latter half of the year, and sampling to customers will begin in Q2 2025.
