Three of the top brands in smartphones today are Apple, BlackBerry and Android. Each of these mobile phone types also has their own app store where users can download various apps. Each of their app stores are unique in comparison to one another.
Without a doubt, of all three app stores, BlackBerry’s App World lags far behind Apple’s App Store and Google’s Android Market. Some have pointed to the fact that up until recently, BlackBerry devices have not featured touchscreens – which make it possible to play certain games that would be difficult to enjoy if formatted for BlackBerry. Also, phones with the Apple Operating System and Android are much more popular today than BlackBerry.
BlackBerry’s App World features approximately 10,000 apps which is significantly less than Apple and Android. Android’s apps number well over 100,000 apps. On the other hand, Apple beats them both with over a quarter of a million apps.  One major difference with Apple’s App World, they have made it much easier for their customers to find and download apps. iPhone users cannot even start their device until they have connected to a computer and run iTunes. Once this happens users are never far from downloading apps on their phones. However, with the BlackBerry App World, many users find it more difficult to get to the place to actually download an app.
Another reason for major differences between the Android Market and Apple’s App Store stems from the fact that both Android and iOS were first designed as platforms. This is different than BlackBerry which was designed as a device. Therefore, there wasn’t a lot of thought that BlackBerry would be competing in a smartphone market with expanded capacity. Research in Motion, BlackBerry’s parent company wasn’t anticipating competing in the smartphone platform market.
