Keeping your iOS Device Safe During the Olympics

The star studded, stunts packed London Olympics 2012 opening ceremony was a beautiful event, the creators took the whole world back in time through the British history.  The public and tourists will be out in force supporting the Olympics however unfortunately so will be the pick pockets who are simply out for your smart phones.

Benzinga’s website states “From the iPhone 4S and the Galaxy S III to various BlackBerry devices, an estimated 67,000 phones are expected to be lost or stolen during the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London…… Venafi estimates that 214.4 terabytes of data (the equivalent of more than 200 million books) will be lost or end up in the wrong hands during the Olympic Games”

So here are some tips to keep your handset safe and secure during the Olympics:

Lock Screen Password:

Set up a very secure but easy to remember password or pin code for your smart phone so that if it were to be stolen or lost, you can be sure no one can get in your phone at least till you can use Find my iPhone service to remotely wipe it and track it.

Find my iPhone:

First thing to do or during setup is make sure you setup Find my iPhone iCloud service so that you can track your handset and should in case it was not stolen you might be able to track where you left it.  You can also use the iCloud service for remote locking, wiping or even sending a message to the pick pocket, maybe send a plea offering reward for safe return.

Backup (iCloud):

Keep regular backup of your iOS devices, this is so that you will never lose you contacts, notes, emails, messages, photos and any other important data you have stored on it.  Make sure that you either backup via iCloud or via your PC/MAC iTunes application.  Keeping a regular backup is never easier with iCloud scheduled backup.  If you end up not been able to retrieve your handset, you can get another iOS device and restore your data onto it.

Insurance:

Get a cheap mobile phone insurance, you can get them with you bank, online service like protect my bubble, or using your house insurance; without having an insurance cover you might have to spend a lot of money another iPhone or iPad replacement.  Barclays bank provides gadget insurance which can cover your iPad.

Change Passwords:

One more thing is to make sure that you change the password to all accounts associated with your handset, be it your email accounts or iTunes account; it is to ensure even if someone manages to crack your password or phone lock code, they will not have access to further emails and go on an app shopping spree.

Finally Notify the authority.
