The two smartphones set to reshape Google’s stand in the mobile industry, with the X Phone opening up customisation and the Nexus 5 coming at such a cheap price with no carriers every US smartphone owner should jump on board.
Disappointingly, both smartphones are now reported to not be ready or will be shown at a private event, instead of at Google’s annual I/O. This does not mean we will have to wait long, we suspect the Nexus 5 to be ready before late 2013.
X Phone
The X Phone recently got a huge boost in realism when Guy Kawasaki, the ex-Apple evangelist and now Motorola advisor put a video of a Porsche being custom made by the buyer, with Guy questioning if this customisation could be done on smartphones.
According to people with knowledge on the situation, Motorola will roll out a customisation store filled with different colours, different features and different price points – this will be the first of its kind and will be directly incorporated with Google.
Nexus 5Â
Not much is known about the Nexus 5, it will be developed by LG or HTC, according to recent rumours, although it is still possible there will be two version, from both suppliers.
The Nexus 5 will likely be an improvement on the already fantastic Nexus 4, with LTE and a new version of Android (Key Lime Pie). Google will roll this out contract free for a good sum, around $300 – 400.
Google I/O
There is still plenty to look forward to, even if the Nexus 5 and X Phone are not present at Google I/O. The Nexus tablets will both be renewed, according to reports, although the Nexus 10 may be discontinued due to poor sales.
Google Glass may be ready to be shown off, for launch late 2013. Eric Schmidt did say earlier this week it may be over a year before we see a consumer model out, but Sergey Brin recently said he hopes to start selling the glasses before 2014.
