Verizon has officially launched the next generation of Droid smartphones, the Droid Mini, Ultra and Maxx.
Starting with the Droid Ultra, it comes with a 10.5MP camera capable of shooting 1080p video and Motorola named it “the thinnest smartphone” without really giving any thinness specs. It comes with hot red or black kevlar backing and will be available for $199 on contract.
The Droid Mini will have the same specs as the Ultra, but will come in a smaller 4.3-inch package. The Droid Ultra and Maxx are both 5-inch 720p screen smartphones. The Droid Mini will start at $99 and looks to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and HTC One Mini.
Then came the Droid Maxx, the big brother with an apparent 48 hours of battery life. The previous version of the Droid Maxx had around 32 hours of battery life and Motorola has extended this to something no smartphone can beat. This will hit the buyer back $299 on contract if they want that extra juice.
All three phones will come with Motorola’s X8 mobile computing system, inside are 2 application cores, 4 graphics cores, one contextual computing core and one natural language processing core. They will also have two times the RAM compared to previous Droid units.
Touchless control was shown off, this was leaked and apparently a Moto X exclusive. It allows the user to send emails, add notifications and do other tasks through voice recognition without entering the phone.
Motorola has also added Active Display, making some areas brighten up and others dim down on the display depending on what the user is looking at. Quick Capture is a simple route to taking and sharing photos.
All phones are available to pre-order now and will be coming on August 20.
