What's This?

While the Zenfone 12 Ultra is no doubt one of the biggest highlights in ASUS’ 2025 lineup of smartphones, the Taiwanese tech giant sneakily added another new device in its current roster in the form of the ROG Phone 9 FE. Taking a page from Samsung’s playbook, the “FE” designation means that the new ROG Phone 9 variant is a bit underpowered when compared to its siblings, which themselves are already impressive in terms of hardware.

At the moment, it’s worth mentioning that the ROG Phone 9 FE (which we’ll refer to simply as the “9 FE” onwards) is currently only available in a few countries including Southeast Asia, where the device was first spotted on a local ASUS website. It’s also not that cheap despite being an “affordable” version of a flagship model, with a starting price of around €857. With that said, what can you expect from ASUS’ new ROG Phone 9 variant? Let’s take a look.

Perhaps one of the biggest differences in terms of hardware is the phone’s chipset. ASUS equipped its first wave of ROG Phone 9 devices with the Snapdragon 8 Elite, the latest and most powerful mobile processor from Qualcomm. By comparison, the 9 FE “only” comes with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which was launched back in 2023. Make no mistake though as the 8 Gen 3 is still very much a capable chipset on its own, and for users who are after a device that’s suitable for gaming and other resource-hungry apps the 8 Gen 3 blazes through pretty much everything you throw at it – the built-in 16GB of RAM also helps a lot, we reckon.

As for design, you’d be hard-pressed to tell the 9 FE apart from its siblings, as it comes with pretty much the same overall look, down to the customizable rear panel with the built-in lighting effects. The 9 FE’s display features a 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED panel, and it gets a decent peak brightness of up to 2,500 nits and a 185Hz refresh rate, which makes it ideal for content consumption including Netflix binges and of course, gaming sessions. Protecting the display is a layer of Gorilla Glass Victus 2. As for software, the phone runs on Android 15 with ASUS’ very own ROG UI, which gives you access to ASUS’ exclusive set of gaming-specific software features and apps.

Other details include a triple-camera setup with a 50MP main camera, which is accompanied by a 5MP macro camera and a 13MP ultrawide sensor, complemented by a 32MP front camera for selfies and video calls. The phone also packs a 5,500 mAh battery with 65W wired charging speeds, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack. There’s no word yet regarding availability and pricing for Western markets, although we’re hoping that it eventually becomes available for more buyers worldwide.
