While Chromebooks aren’t usually the most powerful laptop computers on the market, they’re a great way of getting all the essentials such as access to educational software, and even basic production apps for schoolwork all at an affordable price. With that said, ASUS recently announced its latest generation of Chromebook CR models, which are built for K-12 students and educators. ASUS says that it’s packed a ton of practical features into the new CR series, including robust designs as well as a host of other essential functions.

There are four models within the range, which include the CR1104C and CR1204C with traditional clamshell designs, and the CR1104F and CR1204F, which come with convertible designs that allow them to be used as tablets. The new CR Chromebooks come with rugged and modular designs, allowing users to replace components should these be damaged or need upgrading. ASUS has equipped the laptops with a rubber bumper that goes all around the edges for durability and a bit of extra protection from knocks and bumps. In addition to MIL-STD-810H US military-grade standards, the keyboards are also designed to be spill-resistant, keeping them safe from most liquids.
While they feature a traditional laptop design, the CR1104C and CR1204C can be opened up to 180 degrees to lay flat, or flipped all the way up to 360 degrees. They’re also available in either 11.6-inch or 12.2-inch screen sizes, which are protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass for added durability. ASUS has also added touch support which responds to both finger and pen input, making them even more ideal for use in the classroom.

For connectivity, the new CR models are equipped with support for WiFi 6E (802.11ax) and even optional 4G LTE support for on-the-go internet connectivity. Given that they’re catered for educational use cases, there’s not a lot of processing power here – the laptops are available in either Intel N150/ N250 Processor configurations, along with up to 16GB of RAM and 128GB of internal eMMC storage. ASUS has also added built-in cameras to this setup, with a 13MP outward-facing camera in addition to a front camera with 1080p resolution for online classes and meetings.
There’s also a pretty varied selection of hardware connectivity ports, including two USB 3.2 Type-C ports on the side for data transfers, video output, and power delivery, as well as two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, an HDMI 1.4b port, an audio combo jack, and a Kensington Lock slot for added security. Other details include 42/50 Wh, 3-cell Li-ion batteries, optional built-in stylus configurations, as well as Chrome OS inside.
