With Android 14 rolling out at full-speed for different devices and manufacturers, OPPO has joined the likes of Google and Samsung in announcing its new and upcoming ColorOS 14, its custom Android interface. ColorOS 14 brings some new features, while integrating a lot of familiar OPPO software experiences that brand loyalists and newcomers will find useful. It’s based on Android 14, and comes with enhancements to the user interface and other functionality.
Design Elements
OPPO says that it developed a unique design language for ColorOS 14 based on the Aquamorphic visual ements which were first introduced with ColorOS 13. The entire UI aims to establish a natural-flowing connection between users and their OPPO device, including sound effects, colour systems, interactions, inputs and more. For system sounds and ringtones, OPPO says that it worked closely with leading sound design professionals, as well as professional academies in order to study user audio preferences and develop the right balance of audio experiences with ColorOS 14.
For visuals, ColorOS 14 comes with an upgraded Colouring system that adapts to a device’s status, time, and on-screen content, making for a more immersive experience for the user. This works alongside the Aqua Dynamics design that enables more intuitive interactions for users in the form of bubbles, capsules, and panels that expand from the status bar to present information in a way that naturally flows and merges with minimal disruption.
A brand-new Aqua Dynamics design, introduced by ColorOS 14, enables more intuitive interactions for users. This feature integrates common forms of interaction into bubbles, capsules, and panels that expand from the status bar to present information in a way that naturally flows and merges with minimal disruption.
There’s also a new Go Green AOD that includes three sets of Environment Vision pages, where each set includes five environment-related animations that change based on users’ daily step count. OPPO says that this shows the reduced carbon dioxide emissions from walking instead of taking other forms of transport.
New AI Features
ColorOS 14 also includes handy AI-powered features, such as the newly-introduced Smart Touch functionality. With Smart Touch, users can select content like text, images, and videos from their device’s built-in system and third-party apps, and then collect them on the File Dock or a single note by using select and drag gestures.
Meanwhile, the File Dock on the Smart Sidebar allows users to share content across different apps via split-screen, floating windows, or on the Dock itself. Additionally, content can be stored automatically in the File Dock and can be synced across different compatible devices like smartphones and tablets for better accessibility.
ColorOS 14 also features Smart Image Matting, allowing users to crop multiple subjects like persons and animals from photos or video stills, and use the images as stickers, send them to other users, or paste them onto compatible apps and media.
Performance Boost
For performance, OPPO claims that it has enhanced ColorOS 14’s ability to give folks a seamless user experience thanks to the built-in Trinity Engine, which uses ROM Vitalization, RAM Vitalization, and CPU Vitalization to ensure that a user’s device is lag-free and always running in tip-top shape.
With that said, ROM Vitalization frees up memory space by compressing app and file data, using App Compression and File Compression that users can access via the Phone Manager setting. OPPO claims that a device running ROM Vitalization can save up to 20GB of storage space. Meanwhile, RAM Vitalization improves memory performance by keeping more apps running in the background, improving usage fluidity by 10% and sustaining frequently used apps in the background for up to 72 hours.
For CPU Vitalization, OPPO has included a custom computing power model that can schedule power resources while determining the best balance between performance and power consumption, meaning that users need not compromise their phone’s performance just to save a bit of battery. Speaking of the latter, ColorOS 14 also includes the AI-powered Smart Charging feature, that automatically adjusts the charging current based on the smartphone’s usage status to reduce battery wear.
Privacy Features and Compatibility
With Android 14’s updated privacy capabilities, ColorOS 14 includes the new Picture Keeper function, which controls how apps can access a user’s media files such as photo and video, requiring apps to obtain permission whenever selecting certain photos and video files.
OPPO users will appreciate the fact that ColorOS 14 will be ade available to several models in OPPO’s device lineup, with the beta version rolling out to more users soon. The table below shows the different devices and release windows for ColorOS 14:
