Google’s $12.4 billion acquisition of Motorola has not brought Mountain View much success in the two years, with the two technology companies staying separated and Motorola still bringing rather mediocre devices to the market.
This could all change with the X Phone, the first partnership directly linked with Google. Motorola will develop the hardware, on the outlines Google has put forward and it will go up against high-tier smartphones at an affordable price.
Rumours have been floating all over the web regarding the X Phone, with the idea of full customisation coming from Motorola advisor and ex-Apple evangelist Guy Kawasaki.
However, we suspect Google will offer different tier sets of the smartphone, ranging from low end to high tier and these will come with different material backing.
This means users will be able to choose the type of device they want to fit what they do with a phone and can customise the X Phone with different backings, to make it even more personal.
The X Phone display will be very trimmed, to the point there is almost no bezel on the device. Google’s new enhancements on the software side make uncommon touches less noticed by the software.
One report states the X Phone will come with a full HD display, 4.7 inches screen, 32GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM and stock Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. This may be the highest tier version of the smartphone.
Hopefully we will see the Google X Phone at Google I/O in April – with a 3 hour long event, there has to be time for some new smartphone releases, although this may be the Nexus 5 with Google’s new Nexus UI.
Motorola has been continually downsized since Google purchased it and still loses income year on year. The gap is shortening and we suspect with Google taking full control they may make the subsidiary profitable once again.
