It’s that time of the year again – IFA Berlin is one of the industry’s biggest annual trade shows, with companies giving exclusive access to some of their latest and upcoming hardware. As such, Chinese tech brand Honor was also present at the event, and we were finally able to see what the company has been working on lately.
More specifically, Honor unveiled a new concept device, the “Honor V Purse,” an Android-powered foldable that’s made to impress with its stylish design. The company also announced global availability for the Honor Magic Vs, its newest flagship Android foldable. Company CEO George Zhao states:
“HONOR’s foldable smartphones have come a long way, with each iteration showcasing remarkable advancements in design, functionality and durability… Not only that, but with our phone-to-purse concept brought to life through the HONOR V Purse, we are exploring sustainable solutions that leverage emerging foldable technology to empower creativity and shape tomorrow’s lifestyle.”
Honor V Purse
First up is the Honor V Purse, one of the more unique foldable devices that we’ve seen in a while. While it’s only a concept device at the moment, it’s interesting to see how Honor has approached the traditional Android foldable design, and given it a few new twists, at least in terms of overall aesthetics. The phone incorporates a series of customisable always-on displays, which are integrated into a design that’s made to look like a handbag. It’s even compatible with interchangeable straps and chains, which can clip onto the device’s hinge, much as a handbag or purse would.
Honor says that it has teamed up with several brands and designers, including creative director from BURBERRY menswear Bram Van Diepen, contemporary artist Yunuene Esparza, Yuan Youmin from the China Academy of Art and crossover artist Xiao Hui Wang, to design a series of custom AODs for the device, which would allow users more options for customization. Honor adds that it has plans to collaborate with more artists and designers from around the world to develop new designs based on lifestyle trends.
The Magic V2 Goes Global
Honor also took to stage to showcase its latest premium foldable phone, the Honor Magic V2. While the handset was released a while back for buyers in China, it wasn’t initially available for purchase in international markets, that is until now.
In terms of design, the Honor Magic V2 stands out from competing devices thanks to its slim profile, which only measures 9.9mm when folded. This in turn allows it to be a bit more pocket-friendly compared to most other foldable devices out on the market right now, even slimmer than last year’s Honor Magic Vs. Honor also states that the phone’s titanium hinge design has been developed to withstand 400,000 folds during its lifespan.
As for its displays, the Magic V2’s main inner screen measures 7.92-inches, and features an OLED panel with a 2156 x 2344 pixel resolution, 120hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 1600 nits. Meanwhile, the external LTPO AMOLED display comes at 6.43 inches, with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1060 x 2376 pixel resolution.
The Honor Magic V2 comes with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, which powers the device alongside 16GB of RAM, and a maximum storage capacity of 1TB. For cameras, the Honor Magic V2 features a dual 16MP front camera setup, while the main camera array comes with three lenses – these include a 50MP f/2.0 ultra-wide sensor, a 50MP f/1.9 main camera, and a 20MP f/2.4 telephoto camera. Interested buyers should stay tuned for further updates from Honor regarding pricing and availability in the UK.
Honor 90
Additionally, Honor announced a new colour variant of the Honor 90, which now comes in “Peacock Blue.” The phone was originally launched in July for UK buyers, and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7-series chipset.
