If you’re a teenager with a smartphone and a love of food you should have Instagram. The photo application that allows you to take photos in the retro polaroid style, with smart and sometimes gorgeous filter effects just to make the images a little more special.
Since the creation of this application there’s not really been any way to share your photos to anyone without sharing them to Facebook or Twitter. If you wanted to get them printed there are only a select few places you can do so, and if you view them on your iPad you can have a 2x version of the iPhone application but that doesn’t do your photos any justice with its non-retina capability.
D2M are here to change that. Since the initial release on Kickstarter in August of last year they had a month to raise a quarter of a million dollars ($250,000), within their first week they reached and went beyond that to get  over the staggering $621,000 mark.
What is Instacube?
It’s the new way to have your photos come into your home on a digital photo frame. The idea of a photo frame that can be set to view a certain hashtag or to show a friends photos or your own and update instantly is awesome. One of the updates during their time on Kickstarter stated new Facebook integration.
Whilst this doesn’t excite me I can see why it’s a huge thing. Although their initial release was set to be mid March, all backers received an email early March saying that they won’t be receiving their item any time soon. A hiccup in the delivery costs and logistics has pushed it back to mid-July, although Jamie Oliver has hinted at April.
The Instacube is an Android based photo frame with a touch screen interface, as in instagram there are 3 solid buttons on top which are the “Like” button, “Grid view” button and the “Power” button. The design looks gorgeous and reflects that of the icon of the Instagram application. The screen is a pretty big 600 x 600px, nearly 3 times the size of the images on your phone, and will allow gestures to swipe through the images. It connects to WiFi via on board wireless card and is mains powered but has a small battery for when it’s freestanding sans unsightly wires.
This Kickstarter has had one of the biggest feedbacks, and since nearly tripling their goal they’ve teamed up with numerous other companies and Kickstarter products to extend and expand on it’s already popular idea. This product is likely going to be a hit in 2013 and if successful will set the bar high for photo frames of the future. If Jamie Oliver is backing it, then I don’t know what isn’t to get excited about? Visit instacu.be for more information.
