The flexible smartphone market is about to get a kickstart, with LG and Samsung both preparing to launch devices with flexible displays. We have heard multiple rumors on the LG G Flex, with WSJ confirming reports and adding some information.
The LG G Flex is going to be a six-inch phablet phone with one of the first curved displays and early models show a design concept similar to the Moto X, with a curved design to fit in the hand easier.
Benefits of having the flexible display include added durability to the smartphone, with a flexible display being almost unbreakable as long as the glass can tank a few falls on concrete. The flexible display can also open up markets for smartwatches, but this really isn’t a benefit for smartphone users.
LG has been working on the flexible OLED display since last year, with Corning and Samsung showing their prototypes at CES and starting the excitement around flexible displays. Since Corning works with multiple companies, we may see Motorola and Apple jump in on this flexible display craze for new projects.
This new report from WSJ differs from the one we heard yesterday, the name change from LG Z1 to LG G Flex is more suitable, especially considering the legal action that may happen if LG pinches Sony’s brand name.
