What's This?

It might have taken some time, but MediaTek’s push towards improving its mobile SoC lineup has yielded some terrific results, especially when it comes to its Dimensity product range. More recently, the company unveiled its new Dimensity 6000 series platform, headlined by the Dimensity 6100+. MediaTek says that it’s worked on bringing higher-end features to more affordable smart devices via the 6100+, which users can expect to see on new devices soon.

Built on a 6nm process, the Dimensity 6100+ features two Arm Cortex-A76 big cores and six Arm Cortex-A55 efficiency cores, support for AI-powered cameras, 10-bit displays, as well as support for higher resolution 108-megapixel camera sensors. The chip will also enable video recording with up to 2K 30fps video capture, new camera features including AI-powered bokeh effects, and up to 120Hz frame rates for smartphones. Additionally, the 6100+ will also provide better power efficiency with 20% reduced 5G power consumption.

Given this, it’s apparent that MediaTek intends for the new 6100+ chip to be an all-in-one solution, given the focus on improved display quality, higher frame rates, Ai-powered photography, and even sub-6 5G connection speeds. As per a statement from CH Chen, Deputy General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communications Business Unit:

“As developing markets continue rolling out 5G networks at a rapid pace and operators in developed markets work to finish transitioning consumers from 4G LTE to 5G, there has never been a more vital need for chipsets that cater to the growing number of mainstream mobile devices that feature next-generation connectivity… The MediaTek Dimensity 6000 series makes it possible for device makers to stay ahead of the curve with impressive upgrades that boost performance, increase power efficiency and reduce material costs.”

It’s still just newly-announced at the moment of course, so don’t expect to see the Dimensity 6100+ in new Android phones at the moment. MediaTek states that the first smartphones with its new SoC will be available around the third quarter of 2023, although it hasn’t specified a full list of hardware partners and OEMs. With that in mind though, it wouldn’t be surprising if we see the new chip in devices from Xiaomi, Oppo, and such.
