To say that MediaTek’s Dimensity-series chips have been a nice upgrade is an understatement – the Taiwanese silicon giant’s efforts to rebuild its image within the computing industry has proven to be effective, and its Dimensity brand has grown quite nicely in terms of popularity and adoption, to the point that it’s now powering Samsung’s latest flagship Android tablets.

With that being said, MediaTek finally took the wraps off its latest addition to the Dimensity series, the Dimensity 9400. As with its other yearly refreshes, MediaTek says that it’s designed the chip with improvements to overall performance, gaming, photography and more. It’s also geared towards edge-AI applications, a trend that we’ve seen take over the consumer electronics industry within the past couple of years. Let’s take a look at what else it does.
Design and Gaming
The Dimensity 9400 features the company’s second-gen “All Big Core” design, which consists of one Arm Cortex-X925 core operating over 3.62GHz, working alongside 3x Cortex-X4 and 4x Cortex-A720 cores. MediaTek says that this design is able to provide up to 35% faster single-core performance, and 28% faster multi-core performance (at least when compared to the Dimensity 9300). It’s built in TSMC’s 3nm process, and is 40% more power efficient.
For gaming, you’ll find a 12-core Arm Immortalis-G925 inside that MediaTek claims is 40% faster with raytracing performance. The company’s pretty confident that the chipset is capable of bringing over “PC-level” gaming experiences with opacity micromaps support and HyperEngine support for improved visuals with games. Additionally, the 9400 offers up to a 41% peak performance boost and 44% power savings.
AI, Camera, and Other Features
Of course, AI is also a major selling point of the Dimensity 9400 – MediaTek says that the new chip is the first of its kind with on-device LoRA training and AI-based video generation. The 9400 is also capable of up to 80% faster large language model (LLM) prompt performance, and it integrates MediaTek’s new Dimensity Agentic AI Engine (DAE), which can supposedly turn traditional AI applications into agentic AI applications.
MediaTek has equipped the Dimensity 9400 with its Imagiq 1090 platform, which allows for HDR video recording, MediaTek’s Smooth Zoom technology for capturing moving subjects, and up to 14% lower power consumption in 4K60 video capture compared to the Dimensity 9300. Additionally, the Dimensity 9400 offers a range of other features, including a new 4nm Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chip with improved performance and power efficiency, support for Wi-Fi 7 tri-band MLO, extended Wi-Fi coverage with MediaTek Xtra Range 3.0, 5G/4G Dual SIM Dual Active capabilities, and support for tri-fold smartphones.
As for availability, it’s expected that the upcoming Oppo Find X8 series will be among the first phones to come with the Dimensity 9400 onboard later this year.
