Samsung’s CES showcases included a ton of impressive tech, and one piece of kit in particular stands out from the rest of the company’s offerings. Known as the SmartThings Station, Samsung’s new product serves as an affordable smart home hub, as well as a charging pad for mobile devices.
Designed in a rather compact and easy to move form factor, the SmartThings Station gives users an easy set-up process, as well as compatibility with different smart home products like bulbs, speakers, and more. There’s also added support for Matter devices, which increases its functionality. According to Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings, Device Platform Center at Samsung Electronics:
“Having a smarter home shouldn’t be complicated or expensive. So we wanted to create SmartThings Station as a simple, reliable and expandable smart home hub,” said . “The number of devices in a connected home continues to grow, especially in light of the recent Matter standard launch. We’re proud to play a role in making it easier to embrace this exciting technology.”
Samsung says that the Station will be easy to set up, with a guided how-to procedure that users can access using their Samsung phone. There’s also a QR scanning option to easily sync the SmartThings Station with mobile devices.
Smart home hubs work by integrating multiple devices (given that they are compatible) into a central server, from which users can control their smart home set-up. The company says that its SmartThings Station will allow users to automate pre-set routines created via the SmartThings mobile app without requiring users to control individual devices manually, adding a ton of convenience to otherwise manually-controlled tasks.
Other features include gaming routines and security system features. Using the gaming routine, users can activate specific settings on their TV and lighting systems, and even enable a Do not Disturb mode for uninterrupted gaming sessions. Users can also integrate the Station with smart security devices, making for a very convenient experience.
Consumers can trigger up to three different routines just by pressing the Smart Button, with short press, long press or double press activations. Routines can also be activated via the SmartThings app whether people are at home or away.
The SmartThings Station also comes with support for Samsung’s SmartThings Find, designed to help users to find misplaced devices. This works by double pressing the Smart Button on the device, which can then ring your nearby phone for easy locating.
There’s also added functionality to the device, as the SmartThings Station can also serve as a charging pad with up to 15W wireless charging. This adds some much-welcome convenience thanks to its 2-in-1 feature. The SmartThings Station will be available for buyers in Korea and the United States, and will be available either in black and white. Samsung says that it will be available starting February this year when it launches.
In addition to the SmartThings Station, Samsung also announced a few more products at CES, including its latest set of smart monitors and displays, and the new Galaxy A14, a new entry-level device.
