What's This?

Motorola recently announced the launch of its two newest foldables in the Motorola Razr series, the Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra. The two devices are aimed at users looking for a premium foldable handset, and each does offer a unique take on how foldables should be done, at least according to Motorola – let’s check them out!

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra

The more premium of the duo, the Razr 40 Ultra is powered by the somewhat older – but still powerful – Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. The phone comes with a rather large 3.6-inch AMOLED external display with a 144Hz refresh rate, which unfolds to reveal a massive 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED screen, with a resolution of 1080 x 2640 pixels and caps at 1400 nits of peak brightness.

The handset comes with up to 512GB of internal storage and 12GB of RAM, and is powered by a modestly-sized 3,800 mAh battery. The phone will have support for 30W wired charging speeds, and a much slower 5W wireless charging speed, so don’t expect much in the way of quick-charging sessions.

This entire design comes in a chassis that incorporates Gorilla Glass Victus for the front and rear panels, an aluminium frame which houses the side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and a stainless steel hinge. Motorola says that the hinge design has been improved to withstand daily usage, although the inner display is still made of a softer plastic material to accommodate flexibility. The phone is pretty slim though, and as a result makes it ideal for folks after a more pocket-friendly foldable.

The Razr 40 Ultra comes with a trio of cameras including a 12 MP f/1.5 main camera, a 13 MP f/2.2 ultrawide lens, and a 32 MP f/2.4 camera on the inner display for selfies and video calls. Video quality maxes out at 4K resolution, at either 30 or 60fps. Audio is handled by Dolby Atmos, and Motorola’s own Spatial Sound – the phone also packs a pair of stereo speakers, making it ideal for content consumption whether on loudspeaker or via headphones.

For software, the device ships with Android 13, although it does come with some software add-ons courtesy of Motorola. One of the main highlights of the Razr 40 Ultra’s software capabilities is Flex View, which allows the handset to be used in different situations either as a hands-free camera, an instant cookbook and media viewer, and such. The external display also doubles as a dedicated Spotify control panel, and users can even play games using the 3.6-inch screen.

The Motorola Razr 40 ultra will be available starting at £1,049.99 as of today. Buyers in the UK can grab the device from retailers including Amazon, Carphone Warehouse, Currys, EE, John Lewis, Three and Vodaphone.

Motorola Razr 40

By comparison, the “base model” Razr 40 takes a slightly simpler approach to hardware – for one, the external display is a much smaller 1.5-inch AMOLED panel, although the main foldable display still measures at 6.9-inches when unfolded, with a 1080 x 2640 pixel resolution. The phone’s processor also moves away from a flagship-level chipset, and instead features the Qualcomm 7 Gen 1, accompanied by up to 256GB of internal storage and 12GB of RAM.

Compared to its more premium sibling however, the phone features a slightly larger 4,200 mAh battery, although the charging speed remains the same for wired and wireless methods. Other similarities include a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, stereo speakers, an aluminium frame and stainless steel hinge. With the exception of the external display though, the rest of the phone – including the inner display – is made out of plastic.

The Razr 40 also mixes things up a bit when it comes to camera hardware – the outer panel of the phone features a dual-lens array with a 64 MP f/1.7 main camera, and a 13 MP f/2.2 ultrawide camera. On the inner display is a 32 MP f/2.4 lens, which handles front-facing photos and videos. Video does take a step down however, as 4K footage is limited to 30fps – no 60fps vlogging on here, unfortunately.

The Motorola Razr 40 is a bit more affordable though, with a starting price of £799.99. For buyers in the UK, the Razr 40 can be purchased at Amazon, Carphone Warehouse, Currys, EE, John Lewis and Three and O2.
