The recent acquisition of Nokia’s Devices Division may have shook some Lumia fans, considering the Lumia 1520 has just started being leaked and may not come to pass now that Microsoft is head of the smartphone development.
However, with the deal between the two companies not set to finish until early 2014, the two companies remain largely disconnected. Microsoft still needs to finalise and start preparing for the 32,000 incoming employees from Nokia.
Amiss all this movement in the two companies, it seems the Nokia Lumia 1520 will be released and will come as a larger smartphone, the first “phablet” running Windows Phone OS.
New reports show the Nokia Lumia 1520 with the option to scale to 5MP or 16MP when taking a photo, this is a feature on the Nokia Lumia 1020, allowing users to shoot either 5MP, 35MP or 41MP shots and it points at PureView technology.
Having the 16MP camera keeps Nokia on top of where they are currently dominant and the company is set to make the typical design of a Nokia Lumia device, but with a much larger screen, bending on the 6-inch size.
We expect to see this phone sometime this year, hopefully before the end of November. With the move to Microsoft it may have delayed the smartphone a little bit, but the Nokia Lumia 1520 should still be coming sometime soon, we have no word of Microsoft actually abandoning the new smartphone.
As for the deal itself, Microsoft paid $7.71 billion for Nokia’s device’s line, patents and services. They also got 10 years of non-exclusive patent deals from Nokia and will be licensing the HERE Maps for a few years.
Nokia’s CEO of Asia/Pacific has created a new company called Newkia and he says the company will develop Nokia smartphones with the same design as previous Lumia models with Android powering the smartphone. Newkia has managed to grab some available talent from Nokia, before the acquisition closes.
