The story of Nokia and Microsoft gets more sad as the reports drift in from different sources, instead of a deal mutual beneficial for both parties, it seems Nokia was bought to keep them loyal to the Windows Phone ecosystem, because with Nokia, it would die.
According to a new report, Nokia was actively testing out Android on their Lumia devices and the port from Windows Phone to Android was apparently quite a simple task. Essentially they were creating a Plan B for the company, if Windows Phone really failed.
Along with Nokia testing out Android, another report says Microsoft were testing out the Surface Phone, in case Nokia did hop to Android. This move would keep Windows Phone relevant with first party support, but Microsoft was not ready to jump into the smartphone market, especially when they had just failed in the tablet market with the Surface RT.
Microsoft knew they could not keep Nokia on Windows Phone for another few years, even with the exclusive contract, shareholders at Nokia were going mad about the failure to see the Android ecosystem as a positive solution for the company.
While the move may not have been the best and shows Microsoft’s desperation for the Windows Phone platform to continue to grow, it is the closure of one option, the Lumia Android smartphone. Nokia Devices Division is now completely owned by Microsoft and 32,000 employees will be moving to Microsoft in early 2014.
