The Nokia Windows RT tablet is coming at a difficult time, with Microsoft announcing a $900 million loss on the Surface RT and manufacturing partners like ASUS saying they do not want to develop for the Windows RT platform, because the lack of interest expressed by the tech community.
Like a loyal dog, Nokia is going to try and make Windows RT breathe again, the same way they managed to pump life into the Windows Phone platform over the past year. The Windows RT task seems harder, as it still begs the question, who is it for? Nokia will try to answer this with the Nokia RT tablet.
According to a tipster over at Microsoft News, the Nokia RT tablet will come with Windows RT 8.1 installed, the latest version of the OS. This brings new updates and is the first real push on the Windows 8 platform since its release.
Inside the Nokia RT tablet will be a 2.15GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, there was no information on RAM or GPU, although we expect the GPU to be Adreno and RAM to be around 4GB, the same as the Surface. The screen will be 1080p with 5 point multi-touch, again similar to the Surface.
The Nokia RT tablet will also come with 32GB of internal storage, no word on possible expansions. It will have detachable touch and type covers and a stand, we aren’t sure if all Windows RT keyboards will be compatible with each other.
AT&T will be supporting this device, leading us to believe a US launch only. We hope they expand to other countries and we also hope Nokia can nab the price down to less than $249.
