What's This?

A while back, Nothing launched its biggest product for 2023, the Nothing Phone 2, which brings a ton of new improvements over last year’s Phone 1. In addition to Nothing’s unique take on hardware, the Phone 2 also incorporates software features and elements which set the phone apart from competing handsets, without adding too much bloatware to an otherwise mostly clean Android version.

As such, Nothing recently announced that the latest update for the Nothing Phone 2 – aka Nothing OS 2.0.2 – is finally rolling out for owners of Nothing’s Android handsets. With that being said however, the update will be available gradually for more devices, and will initially rollout for the Phone 2 (the Phone 1 will get it later on). As per a post on Nothing’s official blog page:

Nothing OS 2.0 is designed to make interactions with your device more mindful.

To deliver on our promise, we’re constantly working behind the scenes to make your experience as smooth and efficient as possible. So Nothing OS 2.0.2 is ready.

This is just for Phone (2) users right now, but we will be launching the latest version of Nothing OS 2.0 for Phone (1) before the end of August.

Camera Updates

The update comes with several improvements to performance in addition to security and bug fixes. For one, Nothing OS 2.0.2 comes with improvements to the phone’s camera system. The update will bring along enhanced photo clarity, improved low-light image quality, as well as faster HDR processing speeds for the front camera.

Meanwhile, the phone’s main camera setup on the rear will receive enhanced photo clarity with images shot in 50MP mode, optimised stability and contrast when recording videos on the rear camera, improved photo quality in low-light settings, improved the contrast and Bokeh effect when shooting in Portrait Mode, optimised facial clarity when shooting in Portrait Mode, as well as faster HDR processing speeds.

New Features and Improvements

Nothing OS 2.0.2 also brings new software features for users. The phone will now be able to shut down apps when it reaches its temperature limit, refinements to the “out-of-battery” visual when the phone is switched off, new icons for each the different Nothing audio products when accessing volume controls, as well as the addition of the Android July security patch.

As mentioned earlier, the update brings along some improvements to the overall performance and user experience. Haptic feedback when typing has been reworked, as well as improvements to the touch panel’s responsiveness under different conditions. Nothing says that the update will also bring better network reliability for multiple global carriers, enhanced game performance when playing in HDR, and enhancements to the device’s overall system stability.

Of course, the update also comes with fixes for some issues as reported by end users. This includes an issue that affects Google Wallet’s functionality when used in cloned apps, fixes to the “double tap to wake” function’s responsiveness, as well as an issue that caused the Bluetooth Quick Settings tile to become unresponsive at times.

How to Install the Update

As mentioned earlier, the Nothing OS 2.0.2 software update will initially be available for the Nothing Phone 2, so owners of the Phone 1 will have to wait a bit until later this August to get the update on their phones. Users can install the update by going to their Settings app. On your phone, open the “Settings” App, head into “System”, followed by “System update”, and then “Check for Update”. This should then prompt your phone to scan for any available software patches, and it will automatically download and install them to your phone.
