The advent of AI-powered smartphone features has undoubtedly been one of the biggest industry trends within the mobile device market for the past couple of years, with various manufacturers adding a bit of AI to their device offerings. With that in mind, OnePlus is looking to join in on the AI craze, especially since its OnePlus 12 flagship is powered by an AI-capable chipset.
More specifically, the company announced that it will be launching its new AI Eraser image editing feature, which will be available for select OnePlus smartphone models. The company says that AI Eraser will be Powered by OnePlus’ proprietary models, and marks a “revolutionary step forward” with regards to its smartphone technology. Kinder Liu, President and COO of OnePlus comments:
“Empowering users with advanced, practical technology is what we live for at OnePlus…We believe that the potential for generative AI on mobile devices is enormous, with the power to completely transform productivity and creativity. As OnePlus’ first feature based on generative AI technology, AI Eraser represents the first step in our vision to liberate user creativity through AI and revolutionize the future of photo editing, empowering users to create remarkable photos with just a few touches. This year, we plan to introduce more AI features, and we look forward to their upcoming availability.”
Working similar to Google’s Magic Eraser and Samsung’s Galaxy AI, OnePlus’ AI Eraser allows users to select and remove unwanted objects within images from the Photo Gallery. Users can highlight objects including pedestrians, trash, or other unwanted elements in a photo, allowing the built-in AI to analyze the selected area and generate a replacement background which blends into the surrounding environment.
OnePlus says that the AI Eraser is the result of its efforts to double-down on R&D investments towards the development of accurately-made AI-generated content. The company adds that the proprietary model that powers the new feature has been trained on a vast dataset that allows it to comprehend complex scenes, and is able to intelligently substitute unwanted objects with contextually appropriate elements that enables users to make high-quality photo edits anywhere and at any time. Nicole Zhang, General Manager of AI Product at OnePlus adds:
“Greater convenience and efficiency driven by the fusion of AI and smartphones will empower people to spend more time doing the things they love… All OnePlus AI features are built from genuine user needs, and we will continue to invest heavily in developing more revolutionary AI-based features that move us closer to our vision for a more convenient future for all.”
AI Eraser is one of several new AI features to arrive on Android smartphones, with Google recently announcing Circle to Search and Gemini Nano for more of its Pixel devices, for example.
According to OnePlus, the AI Eraser feature will begin to arrive for OnePlus devices globally starting from April. Several phones including the OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, OnePlus 11 and OnePlus Open will be compatible with the feature, while handsets for users in Europe will begin to receive these features later in Q2 2024.
