The arrival of the OnePlus Open several months ago proved that OnePlus has what it takes to keep up with the latest industry trends, challenging the likes of Samsung in the foldable smartphone category. While it has been some time since the launch of the OnePlus Open, the company has once again revisited its debut foldable, breathing new life into the Open.
By this, we mean the launch of the OnePlus Open “Apex” edition. It’s not uncommon to see OnePlus release different variants of the same device, although most of the time these are simple palette swaps with the same hardware specifications on the inside. That said however, it looks like the Apex edition comes with a few more extras than just a mere new coat of paint.
Striking New Colour
Of course that’s not to downplay the Apex edition’s design – the first thing you’ll undoubtedly notice about the new model is its eye-catching red paint job, something not seen on most foldable Android phones out there. OnePlus refers to this colour variant as “Crimson Shadow” (kinda sounds like a superhero name doesn’t it), which is a darker contrast of sorts when compared to the default model.
OnePlus states that this new paint job draws inspiration from the Hasselblad 503CW camera, which is not too surprising given the collaboration between the two brands over the past few years. Nevertheless it’s a nice option to have, especially if you’re after a visually unique foldable device.
Specs and Details
We mentioned earlier that the phone comes with a few extras inside. While it retains a lot of the same hardware specifications on the standard model, OnePlus says that the Apex edition does carry some new additions such as “enhanced” storage, as well as OnePlus’ new generative AI features. It’s also expected to feature more RAM inside – if true, it might outsize the 16GB which was available on the original OnePlus Open.
OnePlus hasn’t fully revealed all the specs of the Apex Edition, but it’s safe to say that its other components might remain the same as on the standard model. This most likely includes the two displays, which consists of an external cover display and a main folding display on the inner part of the device. The LTPO OLED cover display measures 6.31 inches with a resolution of 1116 x 2484 pixels, and comes with OnePlus’ Ceramic Guard strengthened glass; meanwhile, the main LTPO AMOLED display measures 7.82 inches.

We might also get the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset inside – since this isn’t exactly an entirely new model, it’s very likely that OnePlus will use the same chip for the Apex Edition. There’s no word of pricing at the moment for the Apex Edition, as OnePlus is no doubt building up a bit of hype for the device. It’s scheduled to launch very soon on August 7, so OnePlus fans who still haven’t tried out the company’s flagship foldable might want to keep an eye on this one.
