While they haven’t launched yet, there’s a lot of anticipation for OPPO’s upcoming flagship smartphones, the Find X8 series. It shouldn’t be surprising to see top-of-the-line components with the handsets, especially considering the impressive camera hardware that the new phones are packing. With that in mind though, Oppo has officially confirmed that the new Find X8 phones will come with the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chips, which are undoubtedly among the best smartphone SoCs of 2024.

For those not too familiar, the Dimensity 9400 chips were announced a month ago back in October, and pack some considerable upgrades over previous MediaTek chipsets. MediaTek says that it’s developed the 9400 with improvements to overall performance as well as gaming, photography and more. It’s also geared towards edge-AI applications, which is unsurprising given the major focus on AI these past couple of years. Oppo wants to bank on the 9400’s performance, which is an interesting turnout given the usual reliance of most smartphone brands on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips.
The Dimensity 9400 features MediaTek’s “All Big Core” design, which consists of one Arm Cortex-X925 core operating over 3.62GHz, working alongside 3x Cortex-X4 and 4x Cortex-A720 cores. MediaTek says that this design is able to provide up to 35% faster single-core performance, and 28% faster multi-core performance (at least when compared to the Dimensity 9300). It’s built with TSMC’s 3nm process, and is 40% more power efficient, at least based on the numbers so far.
Gaming is another area where a lot of smartphone brands give extra focus these days. Inside the 9400 is a 12-core Arm Immortalis-G925 inside which the company claims is 40% faster with raytracing performance. MediaTek is pretty confident that the chipset is capable of bringing over “PC-level” gaming experiences with opacity micromaps support and HyperEngine support for improved visuals with games. Additionally, the 9400 offers up to a 41% peak performance boost and 44% power savings.
As we mentioned earlier, AI is also a major selling point of the Dimensity 9400 – MediaTek says that the new chip is the first of its kind with on-device LoRA training and AI-based video generation. The 9400 is also capable of up to 80% faster large language model (LLM) prompt performance, and it integrates MediaTek’s new Dimensity Agentic AI Engine (DAE), which can supposedly turn traditional AI applications into agentic AI applications.
MediaTek has also equipped the Dimensity 9400 with its Imagiq 1090 platform, which allows for HDR video recording, MediaTek’s Smooth Zoom technology for capturing moving subjects, and up to 14% lower power consumption in 4K60 video capture compared to the Dimensity 9300. Given that the Oppo Find X8 also packs some serious camera hardware, we won’t be too surprised if it gives big players like Apple and Google a run for their money, as far as computational photography is concerned.
All that said, Oppo hasn’t revealed too much info about the Find X8 series – the phones are set to launch globally on 21st November, so make sure to stay tuned to the official launch event then.
