Pantech is a fairly anonymous brand in the UK and US, with a few budget units on AT&T and Verizon in the US and a few odd low-end smartphones around the UK, but in South Korea it is the second biggest smartphone manufacturer, behind Samsung.
Their newest flagship device, the Vega LTE-A, looks almost like the LG G2 we have been hearing so much about, even though the LG G2 has not launched yet. It has some similar feature but takes on a larger screen size and is heading for the Asian market.
Starting with the specs, the Vega LTE-A stocks a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16 or 32GB of onboard storage, 13MP rear camera, 3100mAh battery, WiFi and LTE-advanced.
This is a phone aimed at the South Korean market, with the success of the Galaxy Note and other phablet smartphones, it is no surprise the Vega LTE-A comes with a 5.5-inch 1080p display.
Pantech has created Smart Cover, a cover for the phablet that has the same functionality as Quick Window by LG. The user can use certain tile apps while the cover is on the smartphone.
The Vega LTE-A also has a fingerprint scanner and back-button sensor, users can put their finger on the back to unlock the phone. This will reportedly be on Apple’s iPhone 5S and may come on the LG G2.
Pantech is the first mainstream device to launch with the fingerprint scanner, we recently heard the Galaxy Note 3 could not make the scanner quick enough and dropped it from the feature set, perhaps this is why Pantech is launching in South Korea.
No price point has been announcement yet, but it is only available for South Korean customers at the moment anyway.
