Samsung Electronics today announced the fourth generation Galaxy S smartphone, the Galaxy S 4. Packed full of innovative features and with a super sleek design, the Galaxy S 4 is designed to bring your world together.
The Samsung Galaxy S 4 redefines the way you live; it understands the value of relationships; it believes in the importance of effortless experience, making your life easy and hassle-free; and, it empowers your life, and can even help you take care of your well-being.
 New features include:
- ‘Dual Camera’: so you can take simultaneous photos and videos using both the rear and front cameras, then blend the pictures together
- ‘Story Album’: curates content, such as SNS posts, memos, location and weather information, as well as photos and videos, to create a photo album which is personalised around your timeline of special occasions and events
- ‘Group Play’: means you can enjoy music, photos and games with those around you, without requiring a Wi-Fi AP or cellular signal
- ‘Samsung Smart Pause’: so you can control the screen using your eyes
- ‘Air View’: allows you to hover with your fingers to preview the content of an email, S Planner, image gallery or video without having to open it
- ‘Air Gesture’: so you can change a music track, scroll up and down a web page, or accept a call with a wave of your hand
- ‘S Health’ software: empowers your life by keeping you up-to-date with health and wellbeing information through a range of accessories
The real beauty of the phone is its highly crafted design, encompassing a large screen size and battery, and a minimised bezel, all housed in a light (130g) and slim (7.9mm) shape. Slimmer than its predecessors, there’s less to hold yet more to see. Available in two colours – Black Mist and White Frost – at launch, a variety of additional colour options will be available later this year.
Simon Stanford, Vice President of IM division, Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland said: “At Samsung, we are restless about innovation, and are constantly striving to create unique experiences for our customers that will transform their lives. The Galaxy S 4 does just that. We have listened to what consumers around the world want and taken the intuitive technology from the Galaxy S III a step further. Combining this with superior hardware has led us to develop the Galaxy S 4, the ultimate smartphone inspired by our customers.â€
Meaningful Moments
A rich life is one that’s filled with meaningful moments and the Galaxy S 4 is able to capture and share every one of those. The world’s first Full HD Super AMOLED display is able to showcase images at their very best, whilst the 5-inch large screen has 441ppi for stunning viewing quality. The Galaxy S 4 also utilises Gorilla® Glass 3*, making it a durable travel companion able to capture all of life’s adventures.
Equipped with a 13 megapixel rear camera, the Galaxy S 4 boasts a ‘Dual Camera’ function that allows both rear and front cameras to take simultaneous photos and videos. When capturing special moments, you can choose from a variety of frame effects which blend the two pictures naturally creating a collage of small and large images. The end result is an exceptional image which blends the subject of the photograph and the setting in a totally different way. Plus, the ‘Dual Video’ function means you can make and receive group video calls with your friends and family.
As well as ‘Dual Camera’ the device is also equipped with many outstanding shooting modes. These include ‘Drama Shot’, which allows you to see all the action in one continuous time-lapse and ‘Sound & Shot’, which uniquely stores sound and voice together as the picture is taken so those special moments are captured in the truest form imaginable, exactly as they happened.
The new ‘Story Album’ function curates content, such as SNS posts, memos, location and weather information, as well as photos and videos, to create a photo album which is personalised around your timeline of special occasions and events. These unique story albums can be ordered and delivered as an offline photo album through a new partnership with Blurb*, so you can keep those precious moments in physical form to look at and share time and time again.
True Connections – bringing people together
The Samsung Galaxy S 4 enables true connections with the people in your life. It is more than just a personal device that can be enjoyed by one person – it makes the most of your relationships by allowing you to easily share and experience many of life’s pleasures together with family and friends, wherever you are.
With its ‘Group Play’ function, you can enjoy music, photos and games with those around you, without requiring a Wi-Fi AP or cellular signal. This innovative feature enables you to connect directly with others to share, play and co-create content and entertainment instantly. Its ‘Share Music’ option means you can have the same song playing on multiple phones in sync to create the best party atmosphere.
The Galaxy S 4 brings people closer together by breaking down language barriers. It makes international travel a joy with ‘S Translator’ providing instant translation, using text or voice translation on applications including email, text message and ChatON. This instant translation is possible both from speech-to-text, and text-to-speech, meaning that you can rely on understanding everything whilst you are abroad.
The Galaxy S 4 supports HSPA+42 Mbps and 4G LTE which means wherever you are in the world, you can rely on perfect connectivity. The LTE version supports up to 6 different band sets which allows it to function in most LTE coverage areas as well as enabling global LTE roaming. Furthermore, TDD/FDD LTE Dual Mode version will be introduced later this year.
Effortless Experience – making everything more convenient
In today’s world, we are all looking for smart ways to make life easier and less stressful. The Galaxy S 4 ensures that tasks are effortless with innovative features that detect your face, voice and motions to enable screen control with no need for finger touch activation.
‘Samsung Smart Pause’ means you can control the screen using your eyes. When you are watching a video, the video pauses when you look away, then it starts right up again when you are back. ‘Samsung Smart Scroll’ allows you to scroll the browser or emails up and down without touching the screen. It detects your eyes and recognises the movement of your wrist, and then scroll the pages up or down accordingly.
‘Air View’ allows you to hover with your fingers to preview the content of an email, S Planner, image gallery or video without having to open it. You can even see a magnified view on the internet browser, or a phone number saved in the speed dial on the keypad. With ‘Air Gesture’, you can change a music track, scroll up and down a web page, or accept a call with a wave of your hand.
With ‘S VoiceTM Drive’ you can activate commands via voice control for optimisation when driving. Once connected with a car Bluetooth, the phone automatically turns into driving mode converting text to speech so you can easily and safely check messages with no need to look at the screen.
‘Optical Reader’ makes life yet more effortless, by automatically recognising text, a business card or QR code information, and providing useful functions such as translation, call, text message and search.
At home, using ‘Samsung WatchON’, the Galaxy S 4 will transform into an IR remote to control your home entertainment system including TV, set-top box, DVD player and even air conditioner. In addition, you can enjoy various content including live TV, cable TV and VOD based on the rich information provided by EPG (Electronic Programme Guide).
Empowered Living – taking care of your health and quality of life
The Galaxy S 4 empowers your life by keeping you up-to-date with health and wellbeing information using the new ‘S Health’ software. The combination of sensors built within the device systematically and automatically monitors your health, surroundings, and so much more to help improve your quality of life. Also, you can easily check your health conditions using food diary, exercise diary and sleep monitor to stay fit and healthy. (Certain functions are enabled by specific accessories.)
To further protect your wellbeing, ‘Samsung Adapt Display’ provides an optimal viewing experience, customised for each type of application, and ‘Samsung Adapt Sound’ offers an optimal level and type of sound, personalised for each person, to make the most out of life.

That was by far the dumbest premier that I have seen in my life. What do I like about the phone:
+Camera functionsÂ
+5″ diplayÂ
+covers for the phone
+quad core /octa core
+2gb ram
+size and weight
+sd card and memory options
+IR (looks like a functionality that I had on my Nokia 10yrs back is back on the roll)
what I don’t like:
-plastic built ( looks like Samsung doesn’t listen to its customers after all)
-physical home button (stupid and we don’t need it)
-SuperAmoled display (why not SuperAmoled Plus, they gave us a Pentile display that’s gonna be closer to 300dpi)
-same looks as the Galaxy S3
In conclusion I am gonna stick to my Xperia Z for now and possibly change it to HTC One once it comes out. Samsung needs to understand that people that buy premium phones want to have premium materials on the phone.
shem2409Â haha, we all seem to forget about when phones were just released with no overly dramatic live stream. Â It came across as a “we had to do it event, its the conventional way”
From all the specs and the possibilities we all know samsung is capable of, i have a feeling they are holding back for something we don’t know yet. Â those specs aren’t ground breaking.
GadgetsBoyUK shem2409 I can’t believe that I endured through the whole show. I have to say that I had a Galaxy S2 a few years back and I absolutely loved the phone. Than the S3 came and it was OK but I never really got used to the design. Even though I always say how great Android is as compared to iOS up until 2013 it could never compete in terms of built quality. (and I have had some of the top Android phones such as HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy S2, Galaxy Nexus and Xperia S) I am over plastic now. When I pay a premium price I want a premium built with premium materials in return. Even if they packed a rocket inside that Galaxy it wouldn’t matter to me as it still is covered in plastic. Every time I take out my Xperia Z out of the pocket I can feel how great the build is and not have to worry that if I drop it in water or on the floor it will cost me 200£ to fix the screen.  I thought that Samsug listened to their customers, well they for sure haven’t in the build area cause whoever I ask prefers aluminum and tempered glass over plastic.
shem2409Â I agree there, its one of the reasons Apple succeeded, their design features were adored by Apple fans, no matter what they did to the OS. Â Samsung haven’t listened in that areas, but it could be board room decision more than a customer survey reaction.
If they use more expensive stuff, it means it will take longer and cost more to manufacture, something HTC learnt recently and something that we see with Sony because it took them so long to get to the Xperia Z, and I remember Xperia Z prototypes went out way before they even mentioned it. Â
Samsung will only work on innovation, features we call gimmicks for now until they can manage to make it a norm. Â The dual camera thing is now new, LG did it, but like Apple, Samsung will make it a lot more popular because they have the money and time to.
