Sony has announced it will be coming to the Consumer Electronics Show in January next year. This comes two months before the event – Sony is one of the only manufacturers who have confirmed they will have a booth at CES.
Last year, Sony announced PlayStation Now, Xperia Z3 Compact, a few new TVs including 4K options and a few new camera, again with 4K options. It felt like a whole load of small announcements, but nothing exciting.
This year, Sony will reportedly announce its flagship phone at CES, the Xperia Z4. This is Sony’s fourth iteration, and after the huge failure in the mobile space in 2014, the Xperia Z4 needs to be a success, or it might be the end for Sony in the mobile industry.
Not much has been leaked about the Xperia Z4 from accurate sources. Sony will most likely keep the same aesthetic they have been pushing for two years now, along with water resistant design, a prominent feature on most Xperia devices.
Other than that, Sony needs to make some big changes on the hardware, software and perhaps add a few interesting services, or go back to square one and simply release the phone with stock Android, to please fans of the OS.
Sony is in a hard place right now, they seemingly cannot compete with Samsung or HTC when it comes to sale – despite arguably having better quality devices – but are already haemorrhaging money on the mobile front.
Unless Sony decide to increase the marketing budget by a few million, it might be the same sort of charade as every year. Sony announces a top-class product, but it is snuffed by most customers for other options, featured more prominently in stores and on advertisements.
