Tesla recently announced that it’s started taking orders for its newest EV, the Model 3 Performance. The new model boasts some considerable improvements to performance, and arrives just in time for folks looking to upgrade their EV. The new generation packs a powerful drive unit exceeding 460 horsepower, enabling the car to go from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 2.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 163 mph. As per an official statement from the company:
“When we designed Model 3, the goal was to build a product that was optimized for manufacturing efficiency. This meant reducing complexity and differentiation between variants. But Model 3 was inherently nimble and fun to drive thanks to its low centre of gravity and dynamic chassis. With a few hardware updates, Tesla was able to create an accessible, fun, and versatile sports car that thrilled in both a straight line and through the corners. Thus, Model 3 Performance was born.“
Tesla promises that this increased power won’t come at the expense of efficiency, claiming lower energy consumption than the previous Model 3 Performance. The car also gets a handling upgrade with a performance-tuned chassis, in addition to a new Track Mode V3 that integrates various systems for optimal performance on the race track. To top it all off, the Model 3 Performance gets a more aerodynamic design and new sport seats with enhanced lateral support for those spirited drives, all starting at £59,990 in the UK.
Tesla says that the added power of the drive unit is transferred to the road via staggered, forged 20-inch aluminium wheels, with new 20-inch summer performance tires. Essentially, the new staggered fitment should provide sharper turn-in response, as well as improved predictability and better traction out of corners on both road and track surfaces. Tesla has also introduced an adaptive damping technology, which is controlled via Tesla’s in-house software and integrated into the Tesla Vehicle Dynamics Controller (VDC). This system allows for enhanced handling without sacrificing usability.
Tesla adds that its made updates to the Model 3 Performance’s chassis hardware in order to match the improved performance of drive systems and suspension. This includes increased structural stiffness, updated springs, stabilizer bars and bushings for a highly responsive vehicle. The car’s track-ready brakes come standard with high-performance brake pads, allowing for more immediate deceleration and higher thermal limits and endurance. Model 3 Performance also packs red brake calipers.
The Model 3 Performance’s new generation Track Mode integrates adaptive suspension controls, which come with a performance-optimized powertrain – this can immediately respond to driver inputs for absolute control and handling. users can customize handling balance, stability controls and regenerative braking via a revamped user interface.
In terms of design, Tesla states that the Model 3 Performance offers some new design elements, including new front and rear fascia for more aggressive styling, aerodynamics, and integrated cooling ducts. These also work with the rear diffuser and carbon-fibre spoiler for better lift balance and high-speed stability. Meanwhile, the interior features new Sport Seats which provide more lateral support for cornering and dynamic driving, and can also be heated and ventilated.
