May is turning out to be a rather busy month in terms of device launches, with a ton of different brand and companies announcing their latest smartphone offerings. As such, Motorola has finally launched its newest midrange Android device – the Edge 40 – which is set to take on competing Android phones from rival OEMs such as Samsung, Google, and more. With that being said, the Edge 40 packs a ton of great features, which we’ll check out today.
Design and Display
Probably one of the first things you’ll notice is the phone’s design, which stands out on account of a rather sleek style and build. Motorola states that the Edge 40 is one of the slimmest Android phones, measuring just 7.58mm. This design is surrounded by an aluminium frame that both houses the hardware keys and binds the phone’s display and a vegan leather back, which should make for an interesting design combo – it’s also rated for IP68 dust and water protection, making it safe to use in light rain and accidental splashes without fear of water damage.
Speaking of the display, the Edge 40 comes with a 6.55-inch pOLED screen with a Full HD+ resolution, in addition to a 144Hz refresh rate that should provide a pleasant viewing and user experience. We imagine that the curved display will be a very subjective affair, given that other users do prefer flat screens. The screen is flanked by stereo speakers that also support Motorola’s Spatial Sound audio feature. The display also houses a fingerprint sensor, in addition to the selfie camera.
Internal Specs and Battery
Beating inside the phone is a MediaTek Dimensity 8020 chipset, which is backed by 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage, which should be more than enough to meet most users’ performance needs for day-to-day use, social media and web browsing, and even gaming. The phone does ship with Android 13, and packs some Motorola-exclusive software such as the Moto Secure App, Motorola’s new approach to mobile user security.
The Moto Edge 40 is powered by a 4,400 mAh battery, and while this is smallet than the 5,000 mAh units you’ll find on most smartphones these days, it does come with 68W fast-charging support, which Motorola says can power up your phone in as fast as 10 minutes. There’s also wireless charging compatibility, although it does come at a slower 15W speed.
Camera Hardware
Motorola has equipped the Edge 40 with a dual-lens setup on the rear panel which serves as the phone’s main imaging hardware. This includes a 50-megapixel main camera with an f/1.4 aperture, aided by a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens. The selfie camera meanwhile features a 32-megapixel sensor, with added features like Video Portrait, Horizon Lock Stabilization, and Vlog mode.
The Edge 40 adds an ambient light sensor that can automatically adjust exposure, and an “all-pixel” focus feature that Motorola says will provide more accurate performance in different lighting conditions. The ultra-wide lens also provides “Macro Vision” that lets users take in-depth close-up shots of subjects.
Pricing and Availability
The Motorola Edge 40 will come priced at £529.99, and will be available in “Lunar Blue,” “Nebula Green,” and “Eclipse Black” colour variants. Folks interested in grabbing the device can get it through Motorola’s official website, as well as retailers including Currys, John Lewis, Vodafone, Three, and Amazon.
