What's This?

The latest edition of the Google Nexus 7 looks like it’s going to make a big splash in the seven-inch tablet market when it launches. The UK release date has been slated for August 28th, but there’s good news for people who just can’t wait, with Ebuyer already listing the Nexus 7 for sale on its site. But how does it compare to the main contender, the iPad Mini? Let’s take a look at the two:

Display

The new Nexus 7 features a Full HD 1080p display – the highest resolution on the market, and brighter than the iPad Mini. The iPad Mini features a bigger 7.9-inch display but only a 1024×768 resolution, meaning Google wins this round with ease.

User interface, apps and browsing

The Nexus 7 packs the Jellybean 4.3, with multiple users and restricted profiles for family members. Meanwhile, the iOS 6 on the iPad Mini is still an impressive OS, although somewhat less customisable than the Android software.

Apple Maps still can’t hold a candle to Google’s, although overall we’d have to say Apple still has the best selection of dedicated apps for tablets. Meanwhile, both Safari and Chrome have their plus points and the browsing experience comes down to personal preference. It’s close, but it’s another win for the Nexus 7.

Features

WiFi, Bluetooth and 4G LTE options are present in both devices, and sadly both stubbornly refuse to allow expandable memory slots – although the iPad Mini’s storage options go up to 64GB, and the new Nexus 7 packs some cool features: surround sound speakers, TV streaming via Chromecast  and wireless charging to name a few.

Both have front-facing cameras and 5MP rear cameras capable of shooting 1080p video. Overall, the Nexus 7 is more feature-rich than its Apple rival.

Battery life

According to Cnet tests, the new Nexus 7’s battery runs dry after 684 minutes of video playback, compared with the iPad Mini’s 726 minutes – still the best on the market. When it comes to battery life, the iPad Mini has the edge.

Price

No contest here: going on Ebuyer’s prices, the 16GB Nexus 7 is £199.98, while the same-capacity iPad Mini goes for £287.32. It’s a hands-down win for the new Nexus 7.

Conclusion

Going on the evidence here, it’s hard to recommend anything but the new Nexus 7 if you’re in the market for a tablet. While Apple will always have its adherents no matter what the competition has to offer, it’s going to have to up its game if it wants to wow the mass market in the future.

  1. iPad mini vs Nexus7 to Compare
Google and Apple have been competing in mobile for a few years now, and it has reached a point where users of any skill level could switch from one OS to the other with very little difficulty. Both options offer an impressive user experience with app stores filled with more quality apps than anyone could reasonably expect to download and install, much less use.

The biggest differences now are with hardware, specifically display quality, performance, and battery life. With that in mind, you can, and should, consider the 7-inch tablet competition as the Retina iPad mini versus the Nexus 7.
