While Xiaomi’s Redmi brand is known for its affordably-priced range of Android handsets, it’s not uncommon to see the Chinese manufacturer launch higher-end Redmi hardware from time to time. As such, Xiaomi recently announced the Redmi K60 Ultra, the latest addition to the Redmi K60 series range of phones, which include the Redmi K60, K60E, and K60 Pro, all of which are already on the market.
With that being said, the Redmi K60 Ultra is currently exclusive to Chinese markets, starting at around £280 for the base version when converted. While we’re still waiting for a global release announcement, it’s hard to deny that there’s a lot of things that the phone gets right, especially in terms of specs.
Display and External Hardware
Looking at its specs, you could say that Xiaomi has positioned the Redmi K60 Ultra to compete in the affordable gaming smartphone segment – while the phone lacks certain elements such as the cooling fans, trigger buttons and RGB lighting as seen on more expensive gaming phones for example, it does pack some impressive hardware both in and out.
This can be seen in the phone’s display – the Redmi K60 Ultra features a 12-bit 6.67-inch OLED panel with a 2712×1220 pixel resolution, a 144Hz refresh rate, 480 touch sampling rate, Dolby Vision support, as well as up to 2,600 nits of peak brightness. Xiaomi isn’t specific if the display comes with tempered glass protection however, although we wouldn’t be too surprised if it uses one of the newer Gorilla Glass variants.
Other hardware details include an in-display fingerprint scanner, a stereo speaker setup, and IP68 dust and water resistance. Unfortunately Xiaomi hasn’t included a headphone jack or expandable storage, so users looking for more storage capacity will have to opt for the slightly more expensive models.
Internal Specs and Cameras
While the Redmi K60 Ultra doesn’t come with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset (it is still a midrange device, after all), it nevertheless comes with a capable processor in the form of MediaTek’s Dimensity 9200+ SoC, which comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage for the base model. Xiaomi also offers a souped-up storage variant which features a massive 24GB of RAM, in addition to 1TB of storage capacity – it’s something unseen on a lot of smartphones, although it does bump up the price.
For performance, Xiaomi has included an independent graphics chip with the K60 Ultra called the “X7”, which the company developed in collaboration with Pixelworks. Xiaomi claims that this new GPU enables the handset to achieve a native frame rate of 144 fps with supported games. Additionally, the phone is powered by your standard-fare 5,000 mAh battery, although it does feature 120W fast-charging speeds, and even comes bundled with a charging brick. There’s no support for wireless charging, unfortunately.
For software, the phone comes with Android 13 onboard, although it is layered with Xiaomi’s MIUI software platform which comes with the company’s proprietary user interface, apps, and exclusive software features.
For optics, the Redmi K60 Ultra features three cameras consisting of a main 54MP Sony IMX800 lens, which comes with 8K HDR10+ recording and OIS, along with a couple of cameras including an 8MP ultrawide and 2MP macro sensor. In front, the phone comes with a 20MP camera for selfies and video calls.
Keeping the entire package up and running is a 5,000 mAh battery advertised to have 1.32 days of endurance and charge 100% in 19 minutes with the bundled 120W charger. Xiaomi has used the self-developed P1 chip for fast charging and the G1 chip for battery management on the Redmi K60 Ultra.
Right now, it doesn’t look like the phone is available to purchase internationally, so buyers looking forward to getting their hands on the K60 Ultra will have to import one, or wait for a global release announcement from Xiaomi.
