After the Ubuntu OS reveal at MWC Canonical has been pretty quiet, that is until now. The Ubuntu Edge has arrived as an IndieGogo campaign looking for $32 million in funding, this is said to be for those backers keen on the best smartphone to experience Ubuntu OS on.
Canonical says they will be developing the smartphone to be a top-tier model. It will be a unibody metal design with heavy edges and Ubuntu is working with partners to bring a 4.5-inch display with impressive brightness and colour balance. They said the same about the camera, instead of focusing on megapixels, they will look at sensors and other specs.
The most exciting part was what they will be putting inside the Ubuntu Edge, it will come with the highest spec multi-core processor, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. This is a step above any competition out there, but there is a reason for this, the Ubuntu Edge will run both Ubuntu and Android OS. Dual-LTE chips will be added to the Ubuntu Edge, for better wireless clarity and speed.
The Ubuntu Edge comes at $675, with the premium $625 offer already sold out. Canonical has already made almost $6 million from this crowd-sourcing venture and it is set to be the biggest crowd-sourced effort yet.
