So before the weekend hits, sit back, relax, and take a look at this week’s top tech news headlines.
Google Talks AI
Unlike past Google I/O conferences, this year’s event pretty much just focused on AI development, with other products such as Android and Wear OS showcased later on. The keynote – lead by company CEO Sundar Pichai – gave us a lot of insight as to Google’s current work with AI, including Gemini 1.5 Pro, Gemini Flash, Gemma 2, and a whole host of other AI models. It was impressive though, and Google showed off big changes to popular features such as Circle to Search, generative multimedia experiences, as well as Project Astra.
The Road to Android 15
Speaking of Android, Google I/O 2024 revealed a lot about Android 15. The second public beta includes new features like “Private Space” and improved multitasking, and will be available on devices from multiple manufacturers such as Nothing, Oppo and Vivo (to name a few). Security also gets a boost with AI-powered theft detection and on-device threat protection in Google Play Protect, and Google Wallet is gaining the ability to store things like concert tickets and loyalty cards by taking a picture with your phone.
The Xperia 1 VI Makes its Debut
Sony recently announced the launch of its new Xperia 1 VI, although the phone does pack some considerable changes from its predecessors. For one, the phone sports a redesigned display with a wider 19.5:9 aspect ratio and FHD+ resolution, a big downgrade from the 4K resolution on older models. The phone boasts a new camera setup with a 48MP main sensor in addition to a revamped camera app, and runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Sony adds that users will get up to four years of software support, a nice step-up from the two years that the company usually offers.
Going Mirrorless with Fujifilm
One of the biggest brands when it comes to pro-grade photography, Fujifilm recently launched two new mirrorless cameras: the high-end GFX100S II and the mid-range X-T50. The GFX100S II boasts a large 102MP sensor for excellent image quality, AI-powered autofocus, and in-body image stabilization. It also features a lightweight profile for a large format camera, making it ideal for users who are always on-the-go with their projects. Meanwhile, the X-T50 features a 40MP sensor in addition to a compact design, in-body image stabilization, 4K video recording, and AI autofocus. The X-T50 starts at £1,299, while the GFX100S II can be purchased for £4,999.
Qualcomm Signs Deal with Aramco
Leading industry brand Qualcomm recently announced that it’s partnered with Saudi Arabia’s Aramco – this agreement will focus on working towards industrial applications for AI, advanced computing, as well as connectivity. Qualcomm adds that development will pave the way for accelerating 4G/5G networks for industrial use, exploring non-terrestrial networks, and designing hardware, software, and services for complete industrial IoT solutions.
