What's This?

In the past couple of years, we’ve witnessed a significant rise in the use of artificial intelligence when it comes to consumer-grade electronics, such as smartphones and computers. Of course, it doesn’t stop there – beyond home electronics, AI has been used in countless other fields and industries, and it looks like the automotive industry is next. It’s only logical of course, given the increase in smart-enabled vehicular features for electric vehicles, and even more “traditional” automobiles.

With that in mind, auto manufacturer Volkswagen – one of the oldest and most influential brands in the industry – recently announced that it will be integrating AI features into a number of upcoming vehicles. The news was made public via the Consumer Electronics Showcase (CES) 2024 held in Las Vegas, where Volkswagen joined several other brands in showcasing and announcing some of their latest technological breakthroughs.

As such, Volkswagen is aiming to launch the ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the new Tiguan, Passat and Golf with ChatGPT, which will be incorporated into the company’s own IDA voice assistant. This will also work in tandem with Cerence Chat Pro technology, which will allow drivers to interact with ChatGPT via the IDA software. Kai Grünitz, Member of the Board of Management at Volkswagen Brand for Technical Development comments:

“Volkswagen has always democratised technology and made it accessible to the many. This is simply ingrained in our DNA. As a result, we are now the first volume manufacturer to make this innovative technology a standard feature in vehicles from the compact segment upwards. Thanks to the seamless integration of ChatGPT and strong collaboration with our partner, Cerence, we are offering our drivers added value and direct access to the AI-based research tool. This also underlines the innovative strength of our new products.”

With ChatGPT onboard, Volkswagen says that there’s a ton of useful functionality that is made available to drivers and passengers, especially in situations where navigation is needed, and even for infotainment services. Of course, other practical in-vehicle uses such as controlling the air conditioning and other components will be made easier.

AI is without its concerns of course, although Volkswagen reassures owners that personal data will be protected, and ChatGPT will not be able to gain access to private personal or vehicle information. Questions and corresponding answers will be deleted immediately once no longer needed to ensure better privacy and data security for users. Additionally, the addition of onboard AI will not require users to fulfil additional tasks such as account creation or app installations, as the service will easily be accessible by using the keywords “Hello IDA.”

With all that being said, it’s certainly interesting to see auto manufacturers jump on the current AI craze, and the inclusion of popular and easily-accessible software such as ChatGPT is of course an interesting development. On the other hand, it’s not too surprising and was only a matter of time before we see AI make its way to more fields in the years to come.
