What's This?

Following the increased availability of the much sought-after PlayStation 5 in several markets worldwide, it looks like Sony is targeting more potential customers (as well as ultra loyal fans) with the launch of a new and redesigned PS5 model, which now comes with a much slimmer size. Unlike previous PlayStation redesigns with the “slim” moniker however, it looks like this newer variant of Sony’s flagship gaming system will just be referred to as the PS5, much like its older sibling.

The existence of the new model was announced by a press release from Sid Shuman, Senior Director for SIE Content Communications via Sony’s official website. As per his statement:

“As the holiday season approaches, we are excited to share that we have a new PS5 model launching. To address the evolving needs of players, our engineering and design teams collaborated on a new form factor that provides greater choice and flexibility. The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play are packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage.”

Some buyers might see this as a welcome change, at least in terms of design – the original PlayStation 5 was known for its massive size, prompting the birth of several memes regarding the console’s shape and design. According to Sony, the new PS5 variant was developed with a reduced volume of more than 30%, at least in comparison to its larger sibling. It’s also lighter by 18% and 24% when compared to the original PS5.

It does retain the general curvy-box look with a black and white colour scheme, although the newer PS5’s side panels will come in four separate pieces, which will probably be customizable. The four panels on the sides of the console will feature both matte and glossy finishes, making for an interesting look. Much like the “new” Xbox Series S model from Microsoft, the new PlayStation 5 will mostly retain the same internal specs, although users can opt to grab an extra Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for expandable storage.

This move to introduce a smaller, redesigned version of a PlayStation console is nothing new, as Sony has done this practice several times in the past, as witnessed with the introduction of the PlayStation One, PS2 Slim, and several slimmed-down models of the PlayStation Portable.

As for pricing and availability, the new PS5 model with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive will be priced at £479.99, while the Digital Edition can be had for £389.99. Additionally, a horizontal display stand will be included with the new PS5 model, while a new vertical stand designed to be compatible with all PS5 models will be sold separately at £24.99.

The new PS5 models are expected to hit store shelves starting in November 2023.
